Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is committed to the health and wellness of all its members and this fall, BCBSNC in conjunction with the North Carolina State Park system is encouraging NC residents to get out and hike! This community initiative, appropriately named Hike NC!, is at aimed getting North Carolinians off the couch and into the great outdoors. The Hike NC! campaign consists of more than 60 guided hikes through North Carolina nature preserves and state parks. Led by hiking and nature experts and totally free, these hikes are intended to help improve the overall health of Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC members.
Kathy Higgins, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield NC, explains the reasoning behind the initiative in an October 9th article entitled Hike NC! Makes it Easy for North Carolinians to Explore the Outdoors: “As a North Carolina company, it’s our mission to improve the health and well-being of our customers and communities.” According to America’s Health Ratings, in 2015 North Carolina ranked 31st among the 50 states for overall health, a number that leaves much room for improvement.
BCBSNC hopes that Hike NC! will encourage members to take advantage of North Carolina’s extensive hiking opportunities by making the idea of hiking “more approachable” for every age and fitness level. The first hikes began October 1st and will continue through the end of 2016, with hikes covering six regions including Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville-New Bern, The Triad, The Triangle, and Wilmington.
